THE HUTTONS
Margaret and Derek Hutton own and operate Stonegate. They live in the carriage house on the property and are fully engaged, active members of the Lexington community. Their love of fly-fishing, hiking, higher education, historical preservation and hospitality drew them to Lexington and the purchase of Stonegate. They are actively restoring Stonegate to the beautiful property she once was, inviting guests to experience a part of history and explore the Virginia outdoors.
Our Story
Prior to Stonegate Derek and Margaret were the General Managers of Bair’s Lodge, on South Andros Island in The Bahamas. Bair’s Lodge is widely considered the premier destination for bonefishing in The Bahamas and arguably one of the top destination saltwater fly-fishing lodges in the world. Preceding The Bahamas, Margaret was the Director of Faith, Care and Action for St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She has participated in international Episcopal symposiums in New York City, Houston and Leicester, England. She has also organized and led relief and compassion missions for the Episcopal Church to Cuba, Tanzania and Western US Native People Reservations. Margaret loves to travel and experience international cultures and cuisines.
Before taking over the fishing operation at Bair’s, Derek was Head Guide, International Trip Agent and International Trip Host with World Cast Anglers in Victor, Idaho. In addition to the US West, Patagonia and The Bahamas, Derek has organized and led trips for many seasons to Mongolia, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Belize, The Seychelles and Mauritius. He is a passionate and experienced fly angler. Derek is also a two-time Ironman Triathlon finisher.
Together they have lived and worked internationally, traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America. They have walked the entire Camino de Santiago in Spain, walked a section of the Great Wall of China, ridden horses in Patagonia, sailed the Turkish coast, cruised the Chilean Fjords and climbed the Grand Teton in Wyoming. They have hosted many guests at various lodges, churches, rivers and flats around the world. They were both attracted back to the incredible beauty of the Virginia mountains and the community of Lexington. They have two adult sons, of whom they could not be more proud. Margaret is originally from Alabama and Derek is from Tennessee. Derek attended and played lacrosse at Washington and Lee University. Margaret attended and was a classical ballet dancer at Radford University. They both love the great state of Virginia.
